Egg Cam

Did you know?
An egg shell may have as many as 17,000 tiny pores over its surface.
The average laying hen lays 257 eggs a year.
A hen needs just 24 to 26 hours to produce an egg. Thirty minutes later, she starts all over again.
Sometimes a hen will lay a double-yolked egg. It is rare, but not unusual, for a young hen to produce an egg with no yolk at all.
And did you know that you can watch baby chicks hatch right here?

Luke is working on recognizing the letters of the alphabet. Today we played alphabet Memory. I printed out cards with the letters of the alphabet both in uppercase and lowercase. Then we turned the cards over and tried to match them up. He had a great time! More...

Christmas Mandalas

Here are some fun Christmas mandalas.

Post-It Note Name

As Luke and I sat at the dining room table, coloring and chatting, we worked a little on his name.
I wrote each letter of his name on one Post-It Note. Then I put them at the top of a piece of construction paper.I said, “Luke, here are the letters of your name--L, U, K, E. Let's say the letters together. L-U-K-E.”Then I mixed up the letters and said, “Oh no! Now your letters are all mixed up. Let's put them back in the correct order.”

Educating Esme Book Review

Have you ever wondered what really happens within the hallowed halls of public school? Do you want to know what teachers struggle with, what keeps them going, and what they learn each day as they teach? Educating Esmé takes you inside the world of public education as you have never seen it before.

We've all had teachers we've loved and teachers we've hated. My list of teachers I've loved includes 1) Mrs. Cavasano (third grade): who led us through daily calisthenics to keep our brains sharp 2) Mr. Connolly (Chemistry): Who taught us that you could make peanut brittle scientifically. And, of course, the bad apples 1) Mr. Case (Algebra): who told the girls to practice our waitressing skills whenever we missed a math problem. We can all make these lists, and I'm willing to bet that when Esme Raji Codell's students come up with teacher lists of their own, she will be one of their favorites.

Although Esme’s first year of teaching included a class of children who came from broken homes, and students who stabbed a substitute with a pencil, it was the administration that gave her the most grief as they questioned her methods (asking the children to call her by her first name and with the title of Madame rather than Mrs. – because she was nobody’s mistress). Despite all of the hardships, Esme persevered imaginatively teaching her class to Cha Cha as they learned multiplication, made a time machine to travel in while they read, and even allowed a problem student to walk a mile in her shoes as the teacher for a day.

This is a great book for parents, for teachers, and for anyone concerned about today's education system.

I was asked to do this review as part of a blog tour. Coinciding with this tour, a drawing will be held of the names of people who comment on the blog posts to receive one of the following books:
Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher’s First Year
The Children in Room E4: American Education on Trial
Work Hard. Be Nice. How Two Inspired Teachers Created the Most Promising Schools in America

Math Tutorials

This week, I found a not-for-profit organization called Khan Academy. Khan Academy was created by American entrepreneur, Salman Khan. His mission is to use YouTube technology to provide "a high quality education to anyone, anywhere." Sal has recorded twenty 8-to-10-minute YouTube demonstrations of basic arithmetic, and also hundreds of lessons on many higher-level concepts in mathematics, physics, finance, and entrepreneurship for high school aged kids and adults. Sal is a gifted teacher, and even if you haven't found science to be your cup of tea, you'll find yourself engaged. It's a quick way to learn a LOT about physical science, math, economics, and the like--both for kids and for adults.

Dinosaur Multiplication

My boys have been begging me to teach them more about multiplication. Since we are reading a book about dinosaurs, I figured it might be fun to incorporate that into the lesson.

The supplies

Dino mult 1

I wrote a multiplication problem on the whiteboard. The first number was the number of "nests" and the second number was the number of "dinosaur eggs".

Dino mult 2

The boys placed the M&Ms onto the felt nests, and then wrote the problem in their notebooks.

Splatter Art

My kiddos love to paint, and while I love nurturing their artistic spirits, the idea of cleaning up all that paint? Uh... not so much. So, you can imagine my delight when I found this cool place for them to unleash their inner Jackson Pollock!
*Just move the mouse around the screen to splatter the paint. The slower you move the more paint gets applied. If you move quickly, you'll get a thin line of paint. Be aware, it's a continuous line of paint.

* To change colors, just left click with the mouse.

*To clear your creation, just hit the spacebar.

Above are just a couple of my creations. It's actually quite addicting!

OBAMA: The Historic Journey Young Readers Edition

When Barack Obama became the 44th president, history was made, and I was so excited to find a book for my kiddos to learn all about it!

The story tell all about Barack Obama from childhood up through his inauguration. The photos are absolutely breathtaking. The book is written for ages 8-12, but my 7 year old was able to read it. My littlest one (age 3) also loved the pics! There are 200 full color photos, so there was a lot to look at!

My boys especially enjoyed reading about President Obama when he was a young boy. (They never believe that adults were ever kids!)

You can read more about the book here.

You can order your own copy here.
