Free Cursive Handwriting Book

I know that there has been quite the controversy about our handwriting skills going away with the computer age, but I believe that it is important for kiddos to be able to read and write in cursive.  If you agree, and have a kiddo or two working on their handwriting, you will definitely want to check out this free cursive handwriting book.  It is a complete workbook with 80 pages of cursive handwriting practice.  It starts with a manuscript review, and then goes into instruction and practice of cursive letters.

If your little ones are just learning to write their numbers and letters, you may want to download this traceable font.  You can create custom worksheets with their names, letters they are practicing, copywork, and more. 

Handwriting Tracing Rings

Here is a fun way for your kiddos to practice writing the letters of the alphabet!  Simply print out the cards below, laminate, punch holes, and add to a binder ring.  Your child can re-use them if they use a dry erase or wet erase (vis a vis) marker to complete them.  I am having Luke practice these each day.

FREE alphabet tracing pages

Momto2boys24 has some amazing alphabet tracing pages!  Included is one for each letter both upper and lower case.  I made a whole book for Luke by printing them out, sliding them into page protectors and putting them in a poly folder. He can use dry erase markers or dry erase crayons to complete and reuse them.  He typically practices a page or two each day.

Alphabet Practice

If your little ones are working on writing their alphabet, these reproducible worksheets help learners to trace and write upper- and lowercase letters in either traditional or modern manuscript. I saw a similar product at the store the other day for $4.99 for a dry erase version.  You can print these out and slide them in a page protector or laminate them for the same effect - only less pricey!

The Hungry Caterpillar Lesson Plan

Before Reading:

Introduce The Hungry Caterpillar to your child by showing them the cover of the book.  Explain to them that this book is about how a caterpillar changes.

While Reading:

1. Read the first three pages then stop.  Ask the child to brainstorm what type of foods he/she might eat if hungry.  Then ask, "Would caterpillars eat those kinds of foods?"

2. As you finish reading each day of the week, see if your child can tell you the next day of the week.

3. Have your child make predictions about what the caterpillar might eat next.

After Reading: 

✔ What day of the week did the egg hatch into a small caterpillar?


✔ Why was the caterpillar so hungry?

✔ Was the caterpillar eating the right kind of food to help him grow?

✔ How many things did he eat on Monday?

✔ Did he eat more or less on Tuesday? How much more?

✔ How does that amount compare to what he ate on Wednesday and Thursday?

✔ How many things did he eat from Monday through Friday?

✔ How many things did he eat on Saturday?

✔ Why didn’t he feel well on Saturday?

✔For how many weeks was the caterpillar in the cocoon? How many days is that?

✔ What day of the week was it when the butterfly came out of the cocoon?

Christmas Handwriting Worksheet

Here is a great printable Christmas handwriting worksheet for practicing both handwriting and spelling Christmas words.  Would work great for journal writing as well!

My Thanksgiving Dinner Emergent Reader

Your child can practice handwriting and reading skills with this fun Thanksgiving themed emergent reader.  They will trace then write the words "I will eat some..." followed by various Thanksgiving types of food.  Adorable and great practice!

Free Cursive Font

This site contains a free font you can download to help your kids practice cursive writing. One of the things that I like best about this is that you can use whatever you want as far as text for the kids to practice their writing.  You can use poems, their names, jokes, song lyrics, you name it.  If you want extra spaces for additional practice, add blank lines of the font.

Name Book

If your little one is working on writing his or her name, you may want to try making one of these Name Books from Teach Preschool.   Simply print out as many pages as you need for your child's name. Include a laminated copy of your child's name for easy reference.  I have a laminated name plate for Luke that he uses a dry erase marker on to practice first.
