Factor Samurai App

A while back my kids got me addicted to Fruit Ninja.  And although it is a fun little diversion, it is not really a learning game - and I love when my kiddos play learning games!  So, today, I found Factor Samurai!

It is very similar to Fruit Ninja - only you slice composite numbers and try to avoid prime numbers.

Your child can select from a variety of levels from Grasshopper for beginners (which features smaller numbers) up to Master. 

In this instance, your child would slice the 8 which would in turn break into 2 and 4, and your child would have to slice the 4 as it is another composite number.  Super fun, and your kiddos will have no idea they are learning! 



That is if you are unlike me, and you don't become addicted to it yourself!

Best part?  The app is free at the itunes app store!

My Book About Winter Holidays

Scholastic is offering a great holiday freebie for your older kiddos (third -fifth grade)!  You can print out this Winter Holiday Booklet for your child to read and complete as they learn about the various winter holidays.  Great for both reading and social studies!

Paper Plates Make Great Venn Diagrams!

If your child is working on comparing and contrasting two of anything (books, math concepts, habitats, etc.) you may want to try using two paper plates for a fun way to present a venn diagram.

What's The Scoop Graphic Organizer

I love this What's The Scoop? Graphic Organizer from Laura Candler!  You can have your child use it as they read a newspaper or magazine article, when they find an article on the web, or while reading a book.

Making Words File Folder

I can't wait to make this making words file folder that I found over at Teacher Bits and Bobs for Tyler, Cody, and Luke to practice their spelling.  Simply print out the forms here, and glue to a file folder.  The moveable letters are made using those super small post-its.  My boys will love the hands on aspect!

Mini- Water Cycle

I love this idea for a Mini-Water Cycle from Laura Candler.  I am going to try it with the boys the next time we have Rotisserie Chicken from the grocery store (meal plan idea!).  All that you need to do is fill an empty and cleaned container with  a rock to represent a mountain, grass for the vegetation, and a small pond made from aluminum foil and filled with water. To power up the water cycle,  you close the container and put it in the sun. If you have bad weather or just want to keep it an indoor project you can use a lamp as well.

The Turkey and The Pumpkin Reading Comprehension

If you are looking for a little extra reading for the fall holidays for your kiddos, you may want to have them read (or read to them) The Turkey and the Pumpkin which you can find here. The short story is about a turkey who runs away because he doesn't want to be carved for Thanksgiving dinner only to meet a little pumpkin who really wants to be carved for Halloween.

Here are a few comprehension questions to ask your child after reading:

1. Why do you think Oscar wanted to go to the petting zoo?

2. Why was the little pumpkin originally happy to see Oscar?

3. How did the zoo keeper change in the story?

Scary Story Map

If your kiddos are fans of scary stories like Goosebumps like my boys are, you may want to try giving them this Scary Story Map to help them write their own scary story.  The graphic organizer is a great way to get them brainstorming their way to a fun and spooky story!

Free Math and Science Printable Posters

I found these great free printable math and science posters for your older homeschooling kiddos.  You can print them out, stick them in a sheet protector and have your child stick them in their binder/notebook/ or lapbook they are completing.

Free On-line Grammar and Writing Textbooks

Scott Foresman has free online grammar and writing handbooks for Grades 1 - 6 on their website.  Simply click on the grade level, select a lesson, and print out the pdf file associated with that lesson.  This resource will make your lesson planning easy and will also save you money! Love it!

Xtra Math - Free Program for Practicing Math Facts

Math fact fluency is so important for continuing math skills!  I found a program that helps your kiddos to master their facts called Xtra Math, and the best part is that it is FREE!  You can watch a video about Xtra Math below:

See if your kiddos can solve these math problems in their head.  Mental Math is a great way to increase their math power!

Giggle Poetry Writing Prompt

My boys absolutely love the poems at Giggle Poetry so I knew they would make a great writing prompt.  I had them choose a poem and then finish these sentences:

3. When I read this poem I felt…..
4. Some interesting or strong words that the author used were… I liked them because…
5. I would recommend this poem to…

Current Events

I think that it is very important for my kiddos to be up to date on the current issues facing our country. The best way I have found to do this is by showing my older kids a 10 minute daily news program called CNN Student News.

You can stream the program straight from the internet, or use iTunes to download the daily podcast. It's simple to download: Open up your iTunes, go to the iTunes Store, type in CNN Student News, and download the current episode. It's completely free!

I recommend this program for all students  4th grade and above. It helps kids become more aware of their country and the events that are taking place each day.

Free Math and Science Textbooks

If you're looking for some free homeschooling textbooks, I've found some great ones for math and science. These math and science textbooks are available for grades K-5.

There are also online math activities suitable for Kindergarten through fifth grade.

For older kids, there are Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry Books.

There are also science textbooks for first through fifth grade, and science fun for Kindergarten through fifth grade.
